At the time it was considered possible that the new Plessey receivers could be operated remotely from the Radio Telephone Terminal at Brent in North London.

However, the maturity of the technology lead to the remote operation being only exercised from the receiver room control console shown in this photograph.

I spent many a happy hour in this room. The desks had Plessey PR155 receivers to be used for checking signal etc – also very useful for listening to 20m!

I have passed the date that Telstar was launched but I would like to continue the journey for just a few more years as it was not until the early 1970’s that satellite telecoms became economical for small users and hence investment in new HF systems continued.
