PLESSEY PVR800 RECEIVER

Notes:

Until the mid 1950’s equipment had used valve based technology, but the advent of the transistor now began to influence equipment design.

The Plessey Company commenced the development of a 100 percent semiconductor ISB receiver in 1963 under a Post Office contract to re-equip its receiving station near Stratford upon Avon.

The receiver design changed radically from the old scheme of tuned RF stages with a low IF, to a completely new scheme of broadband front ends with sub-octave filters and an IF above 30 MHz.

Phase locked loop synthesizers became an integral part of receiver design.
These new receivers, shown here, incorporated state of art synthesized tuning with remote operation.

These were difficult to work on due to their complexity and from a maintenance technician point of view moving from the the previous valve receivers to these was probably like asking someone who could maintain an Austin 7 to now work on an F1 racing car!
