MARCONI SWB8-10 TRANSMITTER
Notes:
By the mid 1930’s the next generation of HF transmitters were certainly safer, being fully enclosed.
Improved master oscillators or crystal control plus improved power amplifier linearity gave some transmitters the capability to operate single sideband telephony, and two channel ISB operation followed shortly afterwards.
The transmitter shown here was primarily used for telegraphy, radio facsimile or AM voice.
During the second world war, when there was a shortage of man power, the first steps were taken to provide remote control. This allowed transmitters to be located in un-manned stations. (Dorchester and Ongar)
These transmitters were pre-tuned to the required operating frequency and were switched on remotely with control circuits operating the power to the filaments, the HT and ancillaries in the correct sequence.
